Fabulous Fiber

Fiber has many benefits, including better digestion, improvement of bowel movement, and reduced risk of diabetes; however, most Americans do not get enough. Fiber is undigestible plant matter from foods like whole grains, beans, nuts, and vegetables. Older Americans should eat 21–30 grams of fiber per day, but most get just 11 grams. Some easy ways to get fiber in the diet are high-fiber cereals, beans, and whole-wheat products. Over-the-counter fiber products are also helpful; however it is the best to get most fiber from food. Craig Daily Press, April 21, 2008
