Treatment of IBS with Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual treatment to relieve body complaints, which relies on mobilizing and manipulating body. In a recent study in the Netherlands, a group of researchers showed that osteopathic treatment helped patients with IBS with their symptoms. In this study, 68% of patients in the osteopathy group noted definite overall improvement in symptoms and 27% showed slight improvement. In the control group who did not receive osteopathic treatment, only 18% noted definite improvement, 59% showed slight improvement, and in 17% experienced worsening of symptoms. A significant increase in the quality of life score was only observed in the osteopathic treatment group. The authors concluded that osteopathic therapy is a promising alternative in the treatment of patients with IBS. J. Gastroenterology and Hepatology
