Celiac Disease Diagnosed as IBS

A recent meta-analysis of 14 studies examined patients with and without symptoms that could be clinically diagnosed as IBS for biopsy-proven celiac disease. There were 4204 people, 54% of whom had symptoms typically diagnosed as IBS. The studies showed that patients with IBS symptoms were 4 times as likely to have positive tests or biopsies for celiac disease than those without IBS symptoms. The study suggests the likelihood that IBS patients may have undiagnosed celiac disease. Archives of Internal Medicine, April 13, 2009
