Gluten-Free Diet Not Compatible with GI Bacteria

Researchers at the Spanish National Research Council placed 10 healthy people on gluten-free diets, and then measured levels of gut bacteria. The study showed that numbers of beneficial gut bacteria decreased while potentially problematic bacteria, including E. coli, increased. In addition, lack of certain compounds pointed to a decrease in the overall health of the immune system. Researchers concluded that the gluten-free diet may not be beneficial for either GI bacteria or the gut immune system. Navigator-usa.com, May 19, 2009
